Brainstorm #2

When I think of the layering of *noise* I think of two pieces of music that are decidedly not noise. First I think of Machine Gun by Peter Brotzmann, a genuinely shocking piece of music for the mid 20th century. Saxophones make impenetrable walls of grating noise, assaulting you but energizing you. You follow as the quartet goes wild, eventually settling on something that has some semblance of melody. Next I think of Aphex Twin's Alberto Balsam, using layers of synths and a chair squeak to sound relaxing yet engrossing and dancable. The problem is a cannot make music- but rhythm, rhythm is on the table. A washing machine, a train, they have rhythm but music they are not. With rhythm and layering, I'll create a real symphony of noise. A noisy but still cohesive non-musical symphony. Easy enough.
